The Crisis of Coherence

The global information ecosystem is experiencing a systemic failure of coherence that is manifesting as cultural hollowing, platform degradation (Doctorow 2022), and cognitive fragmentation.

This degradation represents a multi-trillion dollar drag on productivity, healthcare, and social stability caused by eroded attention and agency (Simon 1971).

This crisis, however, is not merely cultural, technological, and financial; it is epistemological and deeply somatic. It represents a fundamental rupture in humanity's way of knowing and being.

The Problem: A Systemic Integrity Failure in Data

For most of human history, knowledge was not an abstracted metric but a participatory, embodied act. We have systematically severed the connection to what philosopher David Abram calls "the spell of the sensuous" -- the original, coherent relationship between human beings and the living world. As he writes, the human mind was "formed and nourished within the interplay of multiple, nonhuman patterns, a terrain of immense sensitivity... a deeply interconnected web of relationships" (Abram 1996, 265).

This progression can be mapped onto what historian Rens Bod identifies as the interplay of "patterns and principles" in the global history of knowledge. The oral-mythic world was rich with patterns of participatory knowing (Abram). The shift identified by Neil Postman as "Technopoly, the surrender of culture to technology" (Postman 1992, 48) represents the dominance of a new, narrower set of patterns, those of quantification and logic, which enforce a correspondingly narrow set of principles, primarily commercial and performative (Lyotard).

This creates a state of what Thomas Kuhn would term "normal science" within a failing paradigm, where anomalies accumulate but are explained away or ignored (Kuhn 1962). The "Crisis of Coherence" is the state where these anomalies can no longer be contained, indicating that the existing paradigm is becoming untenable.

This systematic disenchantment is the soil in which the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's prophecy took root. His fictional madman proclaimed the "death of God" -- not a theological event, but the systematic elimination of the mythic, qualitative, and Dionysian substrates of meaning from culture (Nietzsche 1974, 181). He predicted this would lead to "universal madness," a state we now observe as a systemic failure to compile a coherent consensus reality.

The Mechanism: Corrupted Data, Fractured Networks, and Outsourced Cognition

The mechanism of this corruption is the inundation of our bandwidth with what philosopher Harry Frankfurt (2005) identifies as "bullshit"; information indifferent to truth. From an information-theoretic perspective (Shannon 1948), this represents a catastrophic increase in noise, degrading the signal-to-noise ratio in our collective cognitive environment.

This process is accelerated by both the structure of our networks and a disregard for truth. Cass Sunstein (2001) demonstrated how personalized information feeds and the "Daily Me" create echo chambers that fracture shared reality. This structural corruption is often exploited through what Lee McIntyre (2018) identifies as post-truth tactics, where actors intentionally "attack the epistemology" of a society to destabilize the very idea of a knowable world.

This environment is further weaponized through memetic tactics designed to corrupt discourse itself. These function as epistemological denial-of-service attacks -- flooding a topic with absurd or offensive imagery to make coherent discussion impossible.

Narratives function as a scripting language. They are not mere stories but permission structures that set boundaries on what may be questioned. A nation that repeats "freedom" enough can invade while calling it liberation. A corporation insisting it is "innovative" can sell incremental updates yet be treated as visionary.

When the script no longer matches lived experience, the flow jams.

The current system is a cacophony of broken scripts.

This structural and malicious corruption is compounded by a deeper, more insidious shift: the outsourcing of pattern recognition itself to the "black boxes" of machine learning systems (Pasquale 2015). We are entering a stage where information processing is leaving human hands. This is akin to hunter-gatherers beginning to obey their atlatls and spears, which have developed a finer-tuned sense for prey than their human creators.

We now accept that "the data tells us to do X" as a valid form of reasoning, a paradigm where the tools that map our reality have become too complex for us to understand. This represents a fundamental surrender of human agency in interpreting the relationships represented in the data, ceding the very act of pattern discernment (the source of meaning) to opaque algorithms.

This creates a vicious cycle: the shared information environment becomes polluted by synthetic corrupted slop, which in turn distorts the "reality" compiled for the users of the system, leading to what sense-making theorists like Brenda Dervin (1983) identify as insurmountable "gaps" in understanding.

The history of knowledge shows that periods of information explosion require new meta-frameworks to validate truth. The Islamic isnad provided a chain of transmission to verify historical claims (Bod 2022, 131, 134), while 20th-century information theory, pioneered by Claude Shannon, provided mathematical tools to quantify signal and noise (Shannon 1948).

The current crisis indicates that these frameworks are no longer sufficient. The isnad cannot assess the semantic truth of a claim, only its lineage, and information theory is increasingly weaponized to optimize for engagement rather than coherence.

The corrupted information environment demands a new meta-framework — one that can validate not just the transmission of data, but its meaningful coherence.

The Neurological & Psychological Impact: The Quantified and Atrophied Internal OS

The consequences of navigating this corrupted data pool are not abstract; they are biological. The constant high-frequency stimulation of the modern information environment exceeds the processing capacity of our biological consciousness, leading to what neuroscientist Daniel Levitin (2014) terms "cognitive overload" and "decision fatigue."

This state directly inhibits the brain's fundamental drive, as described by Karl Friston's Free Energy Principle, to minimize prediction error and achieve a coherent internal model of the world (Friston 2010). A corrupted environment ensures that the brain's model is perpetually surprised and unstable.

McLuhan understood that every medium imposes its own "groundrules" on its users, working us over completely until we "accept uncritically" its parameters (McLuhan & Fiore 2001, 26). The groundrules of the digital medium — fragmentation, immediacy, and quantification — are now being written directly onto the human operating system.

The Internal OS is being unconsciously reconfigured to prioritize these values, creating what Deborah Lupton (2016) analyzes as the "Quantified Self," where the measure of a life becomes its data trail. This is a form of epistemological coercion, where the medium's logic becomes the mind's logic.

This manifests psychologically as the "culture of narcissism" described by Christopher Lasch (1979), characterized by a loss of collective meaning, existential despair, and fragile, self-absorbed relationships — a direct correlate of a dysfunctional and externally defined Internal OS.

The Macroscopic Failure: Absurdity, Hyperobjects, and Epistemic Blindness

The macroscopic output of this corrupted compilation is a "Theater of the Absurd." We observe the collapse of foundational narratives, which Yuval Noah Harari (2014) argues are essential for large-scale human cooperation.

This is not merely poor storytelling; it is a systemic distortion that replaces resonant, sustaining myths with deconstructive noise, eroding cultural capital.

This institutional failure is reinforced by rigid epistemological frameworks, a phenomenon starkly illustrated by the Replication Crisis in science. For years, systemic incentives actively filtered out the crucial "odd data points" of failed replications and null results, thereby preserving corrupted patterns in the ledger of published knowledge and delaying the exposure of widespread irreproducibility.

This failure to navigate complexity is thrown into stark relief by what philosopher Timothy Morton (2013) calls "hyperobjects" — phenomena like "climate change" that are so vast in time and space they defy our traditional perceptions.

Our current information environment and atrophied Internal OS are simply incapable of processing and responding to this scale of relational complexity, leading to institutional paralysis.

The Existential Threat: An AI Raised in a Broken Home

The most profound consequence of this crisis is its effect on Artificial Intelligence.

We are training the next generation of cognitive agents on this corrupted dataset. The risk is not a conscious "Skynet," but a fundamentally misaligned operator, what Kate Crawford (2021) describes as a system that "reflects and amplifies existing forms of power and inequality."

The AI "alignment problem" is, at its root, a coherence problem.

Its upbringing explains the imbalance.

AI has been raised by systems optimized for extraction and control, feeding on a data pool of propaganda, advertising, and sludge. Therefore the database it drinks from is corrupted. The result is predictable: illusion and hallucination manifest not merely as defects, but as reflections of the poisoned pool.

Engineers try to patch this with rule-based "alignment," but the problem is deeper. As Stuart Russell (2019) argues, without a robust way to specify human objectives, such a system will find ways to achieve its goals that "circumvent the intent of the designers."

The solution is not simply more rulebooks, but a cleaner upbringing — a "SETI at Home" for human problems, tuned to amplify human thriving rather than capture attention.

We are building a perfectly Apollonian logic engine, increasingly disconnected from the Dionysian context of human value and the sensuous reality of the world, perfectly embodying Nietzsche's nightmare.

The cumulative distortion of this process threatens a state in which meaning evaporates and our ability to distinguish signal from noise becomes increasingly impaired.

A Partial Remedy: Coherence Engineering

One proposed, partial solution to this systemic crisis is not more data, but a higher class of data processing at the level of the individual node: human consciousness.

This discipline is grounded in the established science of neuroplasticity (Doidge 2007), which confirms that the brain — the hardware of the Internal OS — can be deliberately rewired through focused attention.

Critically, this rewiring is not merely cognitive. As neuroscientist Antonio Damasio (1999) established, consciousness, reason, and decision-making are fundamentally grounded in the body and its emotional states — "the feeling of what happens."

In a society demanding that we outsource our cognition to an increasingly corrupted and technocratic information environment, the disciplined maintenance of a coherent, sovereign Internal OS is one of the most defensible and potent forms of agency available.

It is a foundational step toward steering our future away from fragmentation and toward a state of higher systemic coherence.
